not mandatory,
unless you are an offline jumpseater even if you have a seat in the back. Offline jumpseaters must present their documents to the Captain and request permission for the ride no matter where their seat is. Everyone already knows what's needed if you're stuck in the cockpit jumpseat. If you're on pass travel there are some folks who like to try to be the big shot and tell you you need to stop in and say hi.
They are wrong. It is not required.
Unless there's a company specific policy regarding that. I've jumpseated all over the country and have yet to find that to be the case anywhere.
Saying hi is just a courtesy. And it might get you an extra bag of pretzels if you say hi to the purser.
