The only time I ever check in is when junpseating. Don't stop up front at all if deadheading or on positive space.
This particular captain came back to my seat just before push to give me the "Son, you need to....." speech. So I've just gotten in the habit of asking for the ride on deadheads as well. His hands were in his pockets the whole time so I'm not sure if he had a special ring I was supposed to kiss.
