For every guy that is doing true service there are others that aren't. Believe it or not just because someone was in the military doesn't mean they are the paragon of virtue. I want the company to keep everyone honest.....even the Mil leave guys. As long as calling isn't against the law I don't have a problem with the CP verifying that someone is where they said they were going to be.
I've had more than one fellow UA pilot brag about their abuse of mil leave over holidays and other manipulations. Maybe it was just cockpit bravado but some guys enjoy telling the world how they have lied about mil leave to be off.
He wasn't just checking on my status, he was being a condescending a$$. I had already provided orders to the company he just felt that he needed to lecture my commander about how he (the chief pilot) remembered how the reserves were in the 80's.
