I can make a solid case for external events being the root cause for both the downturn in the industry (a little thing known as 9/11) and the current boom in the industry (fracking/cheap oil). Correlation with causation.
Yeah, could be just a coincidence. I mean DAL and UAL's pensions were terminated. AMR's was frozen. The difference? PBGC directors appointed by different administrations. The FAA Administrator (former ALPA chief) appointed by Obama brought us FAR117. TSA admin appointed by Obama brought us KCM. NMB members appointed by Clinton and Obama mediated contract 2000 and 2012 respectively. All circumstantial evidence. What happened to us during the Reagan and Bush years was catastrophic....but i'm sure it was just coincidence.
