Remember NAFTA?
That little ole agreement put my father out of work. A card carrying pipe fitter and welder for 35 years. He was a ship builder in both the Hampton Roads VA, and Gretna, LA shipyards. He built freighters and super tankers. After NAFTA, he and thousands of other shipfitters lost their jobs to the Chinese. Those jobs never came back.
Bill Clinton (yesterday) and Hillary Clinton (today) both praise NAFTA. They both love it. It was a backwards and lopsided trade deal that set America into a downward spiral of outsourcing manufacturing and shipping jobs, not just in the short term, but for eternity.
Other negative impacts:
1. Encouraged outsourcing of Jobs overseas
2. Weakended Mexico Agriculture industry, Mexico's laborers then decided to illegally cross border to US to find work.
3. 97.2 Billion dollar trade deficit with Mexico
4. Both union and non union wages suppressed in America due to outsourcing pressure. IE. Chinese do it cheaper, therefore America will need to in order to compete locally and globally.
5. Trade tariffs made things fair. NAFTA removed trade tariffs. US lost more jobs and income due to removal of tariffs.
6. Increase in "border jobs" allowing for the importing of border labor to the USA for certain jobs and those workers don't pay taxes. The Maquiladora Workers program was not good for our country.
7. Mexico's environment deteriorated. Due to pressure to produce more, and become more competitive, Mexico used and continues to use more pesticide and fertilize to keep pace.
8. Open Skies...Not really, open roads. The total de-regulation of the Mexican trucking industry put allot of American long haul truckers out of work.
