Under EASA it is 18 months from when you start your first exam until when you have to complete. There are only X amount of sittings (can't remember how many you are allowed) ie. you can't sit the exams on 14 different occasions. If you fail the same exam 4 times the whole process starts over. I completed mine under the UK CAA authority. The exams were once a month. That was back in 2013 when they were done on paper. They are computerized in the the UK now, I don't know if the exam timings are different now.
