Jepps are part of the flight kit and the instructor is within his rights to check the currency. People have been disciplined for being behind in their Jepps in recurrent ground. Is it a hassle to bring them? Yes. Does the FOM say it is required to bring them? Yes. Unless there is something new in the "welcome to recurrent" email. I usually bring them on day 1 then ask the instructor if we can just leave them in the hotel.
