Interesting, I was told by a 2012 hire. There's nothing more unions like to do than to expand their membership. Even with what you explained, I can't see why ALPA would look the other way a second time around. If that's what happened than it's ALPA's loss.

At the time, multiple unions were approached. ALPA told us they were too busy with jetBlue and the TWA judgement against them. Try back in 2 years.
