I don't see how you guys can't get past the hat issue (who cares about the damn hat?!) and stick with the point.
I get it. You feel burnt when you approve a hire that misrepresents themselves.
The hat is an issue because many feel the necessity to elevate it to such a level. When someone wants to place their thumb on the pilot group out comes the hat analogies of professionalism, SOP, misrepresentation, Delta, embarrassment(do your research on the last two), etc etc. If you don't want it to be an issue, then don't give it the relevance you feel it deserves.
Hats off to the chief pilot who simply said I get that many don't like hats but I'd appreciate it you would wear it. That simple statement probably moved the line.
