Many corporations across the country do this to attract new hires as well. It is a tool. No one that is a current employee gets the bonus. If they want a bonus, they can leave and go to a competing company that is offering a sign on bonus. This is nothing new. Companies have been doing this for many years, why the fuss now?
You are correct about bonuses in the real world, but 100% wrong about the airline world. This is what is grossly wrong with the bonus concept in the airline world...WE CAN"T JUST GO GET ANOTHER JOB LIKE A CIVILIAN! WE ARE SLAVES TO THE SENIORITY/LONGEVITY SYSTEM! What good is a $5K bonus if you take a $50K pay cut to get it???
