I have heard the same unconfirmed rumor floating around. They have stopped buying new hires the leather and now only issue the overcoat. I would imagine the overcoat is far cheaper for the company. Perrone leather probably didn't deal much on the prices as they know they have a quality product and are pretty much the only player in that department.
Order your true size. It's sized to compensate for being over the top of a suit jacket. If you go a size up it'll be too big and sloppy.
It's actually quite warm (been sub-zero with it, no prob), relatively light weight, and looks way more professional than some of those child molester trenchcoats some airlines issue to pilots.
