Seriously, I would like to know how you track IMC vs VMC vs IFR vs VFR.
You're welcome. AF tracks both instrument & simulated instrument time, and there's a reg that governs the rules for how do correctly document all flight time. Basically anytime the instruments are the primary flight reference (i.e. I can't see the ground), it's instrument time. Flying an instrument approach in VMC is simulated instrument conditions.

But I realize that other career paths do things differently. For an AF guy, it's pretty simple to prove time in instrument conditions. I don't have a background in civilian aviation, so I can't speak to that, but I can understand how the OP has questions on how to present a defendable number at an interview.
