If the company wants to blow a slide, the only time this becomes an issue for me personally is when the company asks you to also evacuate the passengers via the slide. That is when it becomes a safety issue. Blowing a slide is NOT a safety issue. We have accidentally blown slides multiple times in tighter spaces and nothing has happened.
The passengers were evacuated via airstairs from the AFT. Nobody had to evacuate via the slide. It sucks that the Captain was put into this situation in the first place, I think most people would not have blown the slide. But, that's what happened, and it is what it is.
I am pretty surprised that you guys would think the only option of exiting the aircraft when there is no real emergency is through a slide. The safety of the passengers were never at risk - but the future of Compass most likely was if they would have had to shell out another $2+ millions. Tough call in my opinion.
