Bolo, thats an inference on your part, I posted the FAA "best practices" no where did I say when I turned them on...when I get within approx 60 degress of the center line, my lights come on, when cleared for take off the landing lights go on.
I've seen lots of aircraft at night on the runway with only the position lights on, not a good plan.
