To add to the issue, I'm planning to go from EWR to SFO then to Vancouver to ski. Is there any way to get the skis checked in all the way to YVR if I have to occupy the actual jumpseat for the first leg? The connection in SFO might not be long enough to wait at baggage claim for the skis in SFO and then recheck them (only 1.5 hours).

Are you a United Employee? If so, just list non-rev and check your bags. Check them in with the porter outside; when he comments that your bags are "wait listed", show him your id and explain that you'll be riding the jump seat if need be and just check them all the way through. BTW, just leaving Whistler tomorrow morning to go back to EWR .. great place to ski
