For what it's worth, from Urban Dictionary:
Tool (noun):
Someone who is a complete idiot;
One who is used by other people, and usually dosen't even realize it;
Someone who can't think for themselves;
An asshat.
I would argue that the guy you described is definitely NOT tool material, especially when you describe him as "great" not once, but twice. A tool is in almost all cases NOT fun to fly with or a "great dude".
