You guys are really getting spun up over what I don't think is a big threat to pilot unions. We already have plenty of US carriers that aren't unionized, and most of the guys I talk to wish they were.
No one in their right mind would do this job without union protection... and you can already opt out, even before this law (which would be idiotic at best).

No, you can't opt out of the payments. UAL is agency shop, meaning if you aren't a member of the union, you still pay a "maintenance" fee for the contract. You can opt out of the union, but you still have to pay.
