Once the trip is assigned it's yours til completion. You are not required to be phone available during the trip. You can go anywhere you want on a long layover. It's your responsibility to be in position for departure.

Short Call on a long layover?! That's funny. There's no requirement to stay in the company provided hotel much less answer the phone. Just ask the guys who fly HKG.
If you do answer the phone, just let em know it's too bad they didn't call before you started drinking.
