Regionals and 737 cannot usually take extra luggage up front. Sometimes if your bag is small enough your bag can fit in the coat area of the 737 but not usually. Most guys that fly the airbus, 757, or anything bigger usually won't have a problem storing a bag. From my experience though the flight attendants will try everything to get your bag on, but once in a while I've had to gate check it.
