The only people that knew UA was talking to ZW, were UA and ZW. So yea, it probably came as a surprise to AA that we are moving our whole fleet over to UA within a year. Flying for UA could come earlier than 02/2018, and I don't think AA was prepared for that.
AA could have been waiting for ZW to bid even cheaper flying to stay afloat after 02/2018.
Or, AA could have been the first one to leave the table and had a plan all along. Either way, they are prepared to carry on without ZW. They have bases everywhere we do besides ORF. I bet AA really wanted that hangar!
