There was an ANC MD-11 slot in my new hire class last year so you may get it right away if you come in as a MD guy. Otherwise, you might have to wait for a vacancy bid. On the commuting front, I met a Captain who commuted in from India (yes, the country). So I suspect you can make it work from just about anywhere. Commuter friendly airline is one of the major perks of FedEx. Something like 80% of the pilots commute.
