I suppose you could make the same argument and justify slashing highway funds. Great idea...let's go back to the good old days when it took a month to drive cross country before Ike discovered the value of Interstate highways.
Your analogy with highways would make more sense if the government was subsidizing empty buses to places that most people don't want to go to. The government (us) are paying for the NAS system just as we have paid for the interstate highways. The infrastructure should be paid for with taxpayer money but not the users.
