That said, a lot of pilots are either going to have to call out sick for this, bid off in the hopes it works out, or just no show and waste a slot.

Still hoping I get a ticket, and hopeful I get the days off.
So they should see when other airlines bids close? For the record, it's before FedEx's bid closes for May. Corporate guys that I know don't bid but just ask for days off. Military guys don't bid, so they should take every airline- major, national, ACMI,etc and see when their bid closes. This would be for about a third of the applicants(at best)..... and honestly if one wants to be there, one will.

I CAN tell you, it isn't their first priority. And again, its their first shot at it.

As to your comment about pilots having to call in sick because of this, I guess I don't understand how that would be any different than if they told someone immediately, unless one isn't willing to bid the time off without a golden ticket in one's hand.

Sorry the notification for you is a limfac, but I guess I don't see this being an issue for most because they are willing to bid the time off, take vacation, move their schedule, etc at the chance that they were part of the first (however many) to get selected.

PC, not dissing on you but my take on this is kinda like "Hey, thank you for the free cup of coffee but maybe you should provide soy because some of us are lactose intolerant."

Just my two cents
