I wear the earpiece, and take it off above 18 and put the speaker on. One thing I can't stand is when the captain wants to use hot mic and then I'm expected to sit there and listen to him swallow spit and mouth breathe. It's very annoying on top of all the feedback seeing his side is cancelling all the background noise out but mine isn't. So I politely decline.
I flew a plane that had an audio panel with a hot mic transmit
and receive button lined up right there with, and the same as, the VHF1, VHF2, HF1, etc. Until they put that in, I'm of the same mind you are.
