I'm not saying he shouldn't check in. I'm saying that the captain was a tool for giving him grief for not asking with cherries on top. Don't be a D. Treat him like a human being.
And, yes, it is lame to put on a show in the gate area. You have an opportunity to great the passengers at the door while boarding or making an announcement or even, as I've seen done, giving a little brief every 10 rows. Whatever, you're the king in the tube for the day. It seems a little neurotic doing it in the gate area.
