When you have a fixed wing CPL you only need 50hrs for your rotorcraft CPL as you are switching categories.
If you have a fixed wing ATP you only need 250hrs rotorcraft for your ATP.
So choosing one does not exclude the other.
All you need is....money...

Prices depend on the equipment you'll be flying and their age.
A 30 year old battered trainer will be less expensive as a brand new Cirrus.
Mind you nothing in aviation is ever cheap, less expensive is the term.
