So, not necessary. The sim eval is the easiest part of the interview. Steep turns, climbs descents, determine holding pattern entry (don't actually have to hold), determine radial and distance to a pre-tuned VOR, and fly an ILS that you are already set up for. The instructor is there to handle setting up the airplane, you just need basic instrument skills.
