I think what he's saying is if there are no AE's of significance for another year after this one, it's a virtual extension of seat lock. If you don't have the chance to bid out of category, you're essentially stuck.
I wouldn't worry about it. There will be more bids in the next year. The staffing for a large airline like this is very fluid and hard to get exactly right in one large bid.
