After seeing this scenario play out at brand x, I'd offer a friendly suggestion that if your CBA allows you to decline an assignment when offered, just say "I decline the assignment" or whatever verbiage is expected when you decline.
The not so subtle nuance is when guys decline the assignment and then offer crew scheduling (on a recorded line) a dissertation on why they're declining the trip. If pressed, the answer is "because it's my day off and I have other plans", although that would be a generous answer, it's actually none of the companies business why you don't want to work on a day off. Caller ID is wonderful thing.
Whatever the reason, the net effect is the same, right?
