I'm sure there are many differences registering cars from state to state. I bought my crashpad car in MEM, took the title and whatever else was required back home to IL. I registered my car in IL, they handed me a plate and registration and I took them with me next time I went to work. The car never left Memphis as long as I owned it. IL even let me fulfill inspection requirements using a TN inspection station.
So, you may not need to have the car in your state to register it there. YMMV, but worth checking.
