I'll bet you next months paycheck that you do not know how to properly preflight an iPad. I've yet to have a student come through who could.
If we had some really sharp people...the preflight of the iPad would entail entering your flight number and then letting the gee whiz technology do its thing. All info would propagate to the various apps and be readily available to the pilot.
As far as updates...that should be automatic and out of view of the user.
