Assuming both FOs on the first leg are flying the exact same sequence, in your example ATL-LHR-JFK-LHR-ATL, the senior one gets to stay home. If the relief pilot rotation is different, example ATL-LHR-JFK-CDG-ATL, then the pilot that is paired with the LCA will get to stay home. So in your example, the senior pilot would not have been released since the relief pilot trip was different. The pilot on the LCA's rotation would have been released.

In my experience, on international trips longer than 3 days it is not normal for both FOs to have rotations with exactly the same legs.
