Green slips seem like easy money. My advice to new guys is to never cancel plans with your family to fly a green slip. This job is hard enough on family as is. Family needs to come first on off-days. I have heard pilots talking about skipping trick-or-treating with their little kids because that experience isn't worth the $8,000 the green slip pays. That's a terrible mindset to get into. Another one I've heard is the $6,000 beer that the pilot just drank making them unable to accept a GS with an immediate report time.
Not only would I accept an $8,000 GS instead of trick of treating with my kids, my wife would be the first one packing my bags.
Now Xmas, Graduation, Birthdays etc might be a different story
