The bonus is *taxed* at the same rate as your pay, it's just *withheld* at a higher rate. You'll get some of the money back on your return.
First time I've actually understood the bonus tax (my wife got a signing bonus for her new job and I thought they held out a lot). Thanks for the simple explanation.
