I don't work for United but I would likely stop boarding for a tire change. A 30 minute job can easily turn into a couple hours. Once the tire is actually changed it will take them a while to take care of the paperwork too. Not much to gain by keeping the pax on board.
Nothing to gain except on time departure, passengers not missing their connections, subsequent timely routing for the airplane. There could have been other extenuating circumstances and without a full understanding of the entire situation, this thread is just a hypothetical discussion. We do need to respect Captain's Authority, but Captain's Authority comes with "responsibility" and "accountability".
All this said, I'm inclined to agree with the prior that it's poor form to come complain about a flight you've jumpseated on. Realize, the jumpseat is extended as a professional courtesy, not as your private jet service
