I didn't mind all that much paying my own ticket either - maybe it shows them you're interested or something, I'm not sure.
That stinks, sorry to hear it. Just goes to show, ANYONE of us can have a bad in the sim. Regardless of it's a check ride or an interview. Best of luck at the other gig.
