From what I remember, those were included as "military" pilots, btw.
It's not on the pretty pie chart, and it's a little "dated".
But I believe the break down at the time was of ~1400 hired, ~700 civ, ~500 pure mil, ~200 "civilitary".
As mentioned, that was a while ago. I'm sure it's as you mentioned, more and more rare now than when that was published.
I thought there also one that showed mil + civilitary number accounted for ~60% of that specific year's numbers but can't find it.
