Only happened to me once, but when it did, I called scheduling, informed them the flight I was operating would be delayed due to having to gate check, casually went to baggage claim, casually went back through security, then hit McD's for a quick meal. Received call from base manager the next morning whose response was "ok thanks". Mine was a built in deadhead tho, I would have probably skippped McD otherwise.
