I do the trip regularly out of SFO...find it easier to go via HNL both ways. Hawaiian has been great every time. Cockpit follows up and makes sure you get on...F/A's take care of you in the back.....great attitude and that aloha spirit goes a long way.

Atlas or HA down to either SYD or just HA to BNE. The BNE trip only goes a few days a week..SYD is daily both ways. QF or Jetstar can get you to SYD in an hour out of BNE. Don't forget the option of Jetstar to HNL out of SYD on the way back. Mid week trips are best for HNL legs. A box of Host Choc Macadamia nuts out of HNL does wonders at the QF and Jetstar service desks I have found just fyi.
