My wife and I have a baby and my wife returned to working full time. I am on the 320 in Boston and bid reserve in order to be home as much as I can. Once you figure out a system that works for you it isn't that bad. The 10 hour 3 days that people dislike can work in your favor if you want to be home more (leave late day 1, gone 24 hours, land at 6am on day 3). They are terrible for your sleep and mood but eat up 3 days of reserve and if you never are going over 75 hours of credit, them being worth 10 hours doesn't affect you much. They aren't always to the Dominican and you can sometimes get them to PHX or SLC which are much better layovers. When it comes to the Dominican I don't mind Santiago but I really dislike Santo Domingo, I've heard guys on the line tell me differently so it is all what you make of it. Our reserve system will completely change with the CBA. Right now you can only bid for AM or PM (doesn't mean you will get it) and you get your assignment at noon for the next day. This summer was a mess and the reserve start times were late coming out for like 2 or 3 months it felt like. This sucked for commuters but won't affect you much living in base. You will work mostly on your last day of reserve doing some turn to ATL, ORD, BNA, or wherever that will get you back to Boston pretty late. This sucks as a commuter but again, isn't as terrible if you live in base. I'd gladly answer any more questions you have about reserve life in BOS if you want to send me a PM.
