It's been so long since I instructed out of Long Beach, any comments are out of date. The Long Beach Flying Club as been around for years and I rented there in the 80's. I have a student that now instructs out of Aces High in Long Beach.
I would try a couple of discovery flights out of various places. It's very much a personal fit kind of thing.
