It was designed to replace the 727 and 707 on domestic routes to secondary cities. This was the thinking in the 1970s. The ER helped open ETOPS routes, and the -300 became the standard 767.
People forgot about the 767-200. But that is really the perfect airplane to fly LAX-JFK or make it an ER and fly it over the pond or to Hawaii. Those old Non Fadec GEs were wonky, and it flew like a truck, but it was a very capable aircraft. I would LOVE to see that return. Comfortable, fast, capable and very reliable. Passengers would love it too, and it carries cargo!
