How is it decided what routes get flown by mainline vs regional?
It's all bassed on Market demand. They utilize lots of historical data. I am sure there is a certain load factor they are trying to acheive. Flying planes half full and leaving 20 people behind constantly isn't good for the bottom line. They shift both the aircraft size and freqneucy daily to match the market. This is one of the reasons our schedules are so lousy. AMR used to do the same size aircraft and same number of flights per day, 6 days a week. With Saturday being the one day with a reduced schedule. Now it's all over the map.
The only place where we fly regardless of load factor is our maintenance bases. It's better having revenue off set the cost of ferrying airplanes and up the frequency to accommodate all the paxs.
