Can someone explain the significance of putting down your volunteering activities on an airline pilot application? Why would that make you a better candidate than the next guy?

Is this something they specifically ask for or is it "tell us something else about yourself you would like to add?"

This would be a non factor if I was on the hiring panel. But then again I have no experience in the civilian world.
