Is it worth it? Only you can decide. If it were me, I'd only do it if I didn't have family at home I wanted to see... OR, if my family was mobile enough to spend a month with me in a hotel somewhere else (or at least part of the month). And then, I'd sit on reserve and collect that month long per diem.

If you are wanting A travel to and from and are not going for the month long per diem, I'd look at Home based TDY. A travel back and forth and you get to bid what your seniority will hold, unlike voluntary TDY. Which means you probably won't be on reserve. Assuming from your username you live in Houston. The A travel for you on Home Base would be from Houston to the 'Home Base'. But it will be A12 which is not as good as A3D but better than D1.
