My class, same thing happened, but he came from a 152 instructing position with hardly any complex aircraft experience. He also had other issues and ultimately was not allowed to do his checkride. We never got the full story though.

While being early and staying late in the classroom can be beneficial, it can also hurt you. Our class did group studies, which allowed us to build off of everyone's experience and knowledge and explain things in a clearer way than what our Flight safety instructors could. I do not remember him taking part in those studies.
