How are UAL’s financials compared to Delta’s? Saying these markets are now being served by codeshares does not make sense. When I flew these routes they were almost all Japanese passengers going to beaches. They are not going to connect on codeshares.
The day the Japanese made HND a international airport the NRT hub was in trouble. HND is night and day the preferred gateway to Tokyo. Without the ability to profitably fly a substantial number of flights into NRT from the US you can’t sustain a hub.
In this business things are always changing. You either adapt or perish.
