“Nearest suitable.” Lots of factors there. Not just DME. As for the F/As and the Brace calls; as the CAPT, I would’ve briefed them to prepare for an evacuation (due to severely damaged engine), which drives them to a checklist that requires the Brace Brace call.
My reference to a raven and "nevermore" was a warning to anyone not wanting to shut down an engine because of a little birdie. Not a good idea. I’m all for PIC emergency authority and using experience, systems knowledge and the situation to assist, but not shutting down an engine when called for can lead to a worse outcome.
