The Feds used to be anal about diverting to nearest etops alternate. In this case it was likely ITO. They may have some "splainin" to do but in ge end I think a non event..after the FAA is done crowing.
Had the similar issue with a GE engine on an etops divert. We landed in EWR. Faa wanted to know why we continued to EWR and passed "suitable airports".
After a couple back and forths, issue dropped.
Not true in the slightest. ETOPS alternates are dispatch functions only. Once an event occurs the nearest suitable airport is where you go. If you are going to overfly a suitable airport you’ll need to have a good reason.
They were 36 minutes from PHNL when the event occurred. Basically TOD.
