Probably what you're missing is that you have to select which airline to search. The default "All Airlines (from your own GDS)" doesn't work, and you'll get the error you got. Change the Airline using the ^ (points down actually but I can't find the key for that) button and select KLM or Alitalita and it will return flights.

I have used a Zed fare AMS-FCO and it worked fine. You buy the Zed fare online, it will give you a record locator, that you can use at the Kiosk in AMS to check-in if I remember correctly. We didn't get a seats until the last minute, but that's how the strict Dutch agents work apparently.
